TWO SHOWS FRIDAY

One of the last shows at the Firehouse on eastern ave off of belmont st is on friday the 22nd. Bands playing are: Bird Names, Quiet Hoves, Prince Rama of Ayodhya, and White Crime. Yes that's right, White Crime (Faux Pas Records), the brainchild of Sam Gas Can and John Guida, the premiere punks from under the underground, are playing in Worcester this weekend! check it out.

In other shows, the very last show at the Meathouse on 33 oberlin st (1st floor) is on friday as well. Some of the coolest Worcester Haaaadcoore bands are playing, namely Short Ride (check out their lyrix), the always memorable Antietam, They Live and Tinnitus. The Meathouse is a sweet basement venue and the Firehouse is a huge former firehouse, both amazing diy venues with very few rules that you won't get many (or any) chances to see shows at again, so check out one or both of these awesome shows!

New Ponytail Video

I heard about these guys from my friend Leah who goes to school with them at MICA in Baltimore, MD. She said they started this band for a school project and just rolled with it. Anyway since they've started they've garnered a lot of buzz and their second LP Ice Cream Spiritual came out about a year ago. Their sound is hectic; two guitars playing wild leads constantly, no bass player, a tight-ass drummer, all capped off bouncy epileptic raw energy of lead singer Molly Siegel's shrieks and wails. She's not your typical singer to say the least. While offputting to some, I really like them and consider them one of my fav new bands, can't wait to hear what they put out next! Here's their new video for "Celebrate The Body Electric (It Came From An Angel)"

Joe Bastardo's Art

You should click on these photos because it makes them full screen. Which is really essential.

Some good old Anti Establishment art from Joe Bastardo of Worcester, MA for your Wednesday morning, with bonus commentary by yours truly.

Greyhound is a big part of Modern America, such a strange way to travel. You're sharing a bus with all sorts of runaways and ex-cons and assorted nuts. A few months ago I took a 25 hour Greyhound from Ft Pierce, FL to Baltimore, MD. There was this crazy lady with many bags who attempted to steal the seat of a young mother and her child as we boarded after a pit stop. Everyone on the bus sided with the mother and child. The crazy lady got mad and called the mother ugly and then spit on a man who was protesting her actions. She got kicked off the bus. It was like we were in high school or something. Then there was this crackhead from Springfield, MA (figures) who was asking everyone for drugs the whole time and making fun of a young black man known only as "Crazy Eyes" due to his lazy eye. At first I felt bad for Crazy Eyes, but as we drove through Washington, DC he got in a sociology debate with some of the other passengers and attempted to back up every point he made with an arbitrary (and often fabricated) statistic. By the end of the ride, which I spent reading the entirety of Catcher In The Rye, I lost sympathy for all of my fellow passengers. Riding Greyhound is strange.

RICK ROSS WEARS SUNGLASSES DURING SEX

"I've had sex in my shades, sometimes I wear my clear ones. A lot of ladies compliment my eyelashes so I don't want people to see them, I'm shy, so wear my shades all the time. I never told nobody that before." entire article about his sunglasses here
He got a lot of shit for having worked as a correction officer. WHATEVER THE MAN'S GOT TO MAKE HIS PAPER. Just because his life story is a little exaggerated doesn't mean he can't put out a cool record. Yeah I said it 50. #1 in the country, got praise from Kanye, and Pitchfork still hasn't reviewed it yet. Look I'm not saying it's no classic but it can't do you any harm to check out Deeper Than Rap by Rick Ross. He's got style.

rockin that thang!

When i heard the original rockin' that thang/shit on 94.5 I fell in love. You just can't say no to those synths. This remix has some high profile guests, including Rick Ross rapping about the president and a surprisingly lyrical last verse by Luda ("let me dive in yr heart and swim around in yr soul"), check it out! Don't diss on mainstream hip-hop, its got a good thing going! The Dream's new album is worth checking out too.

cameo

Thanks to Jacob and the Distant Castle kids for introducing me to CAMEO!
They showed some 80s videos of these guys before the show started the other day in which the lead singer sometimes wears a codpiece as seen above. I did a little research and found one of their 70s videos called "Shake Your Pants." I noticed that in the beginning there's a guitar line and a synth line that the Beastie Boys sample in their hit "Hey Ladies!" from the classic 1989 record Paul's Boutique, the record that pretty much invented the whole sample-heavy mashup rap thing. It's one of the best records of the last 20 years. And that's coming from someone who doesn't even like the beasties that much. Oh and here's that Cameo video:

Charles Hamilton is ill

Charles Hamilton is a 21 year old rapper from Harlem. His favorite video game character is Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hamilton is a concept mixtape about waking up as Sonic the Hedgehog in the real world.

Hamilton told MTV: “I’m not crazy... Basically, Sonic means sound. Hedgehogs bury themselves in the ground. I’m Sonic the Hedgehog, because I bury myself in the sound.”

He makes some sweet beats out of samples from StH soundtrack songs. He also used to be a heroin addict (cred)

I wouldn't post this much if it wasn't all really really good.

For a quick awesome listen check out this song "WAY COOL" where samples the theme song from Clarissa Explains it All.

His debut album This Perfect Life drops June 23.

Duck WOW

Duck Yao is an amazing home-run (home run?) vegetarian Chinese restaurant in Worcester open every Friday and Saturday! I just went there and it was amazing. We got (fake) duck and chicken and pork and fish and some appetizers. So good.

directions to 148 Beaver Brook Parkway: on Park Ave headed towards Webster Square take a right onto Maywood St after the Wendy's restaurant on your right. Then, take your first left onto Beaver Brook parkway. The house is on your right at the corner of Beaver Brook Pkwy and Spaulding St., a white house with a chain link fence.
